As if wedding planning isn’t stressful enough you have the added wedding vocabulary to deal with! The wedding world seems to be a world of its own and sometimes it’s hard to translate. Well don’t worry!! We have put our heads together and come up with the below wedding decoder. So next time you talk to a supplier or wedding professional do not fear, we have you covered.
Disclaimer: Not going to lie I had to google some of these too!
- Aisle runner – This is a piece of carpet that runs down the aisle – just like your own personal red carpet
- Block of rooms – This is the group of rooms which have been reserved exclusively for your big day.
- Bouquet – I’m sure most of you know this but it is the collection of flowers the bride traditionally holds as she walks down the aisle
- Bouquet toss – You’ve seen it in all good rom coms, it’s the part when the bride throws the bouquet behind her and all unmarried women fight to catch it. (Apparently, if you catch it you are the next to be married.)
- Celebrant – This is the officiant (official person) who conducts your ceremony. Celebrants can’t do the legal bit so you would have to have a legally binding ceremony too.
- Cummerbund – One for the boys!! This is the sash worn around the waist, usually worn with a man’s formal evening suit.
- Favours – Ok so I’m sure most of you have heard of these but they are the small gift some couples choose to leave on your table.
- Garlands – A garland is a collection of flowers twirled into rope, these can be hung from arches or stair banisters. (You often see these around Christmas time)
- Gift Registry – If you have attended a wedding before you have probably experienced the gift registry. This is the list of gifts that the couple has chosen for people to buy. This means they only get bought what they need and there are no double gifts.
- GOBO – So this was a new one for me, but a GOBO is a sheet of acrylic which is put over lights to create a message or shapes. (Like hearts).
- H2B – Husband to be
- MOH – Maid of Honour
- Place Cards – These are the cards with your guests’ names on and placed where they will be sitting for the wedding breakfast.
- Reception – This is the party and celebration you have after the deed is done.
- Registrar – This is the person who legally marries you and keeps a record of your marriage certificate.
- Swaging – This is the lengths of fabric that are draped from the ceiling.
- Sweetheart table – Some couples prefer a table for two at their wedding reception and not a top table.
- Tiers – These are the layers of a traditional wedding cake.
- Toast Master – This is the person who makes sure everyone is in the right place at the right time, they will also announce speeches and coordinate everything on the day.
- Top Table – The top table is where the newlyweds sit with their nearest and dearest. (Usually parents of the couple with best man and bridesmaid but you can have whoever you choose).
- Train – Not how you get to work every morning, this is the long part at the back of the wedding dress.
- Tulle – Anyone planning on wearing a big dress on their wedding day will probably be familiar with this!! Tulle is a fine mesh material used for veils and dresses.
- Uplighting – This is lighting that can transform a room (it can make a room pink if that’s the vibe you’d like)
- Videographer – Some people like to have a videographer as well as a photographer so they can have a film of their day and not just photos.
- Wedding Breakfast – So this isn’t actually breakfast, it’s the first meal you have after your wedding. (No pancakes here I’m afraid).
